The Big Book of Dad Jokes
MFA - Grad Studio II, Fall 2019
This was the last project in a series of projects called Forms of Inquiry for the fall semester of Grad Studio II, where we were asked to explore the interests and themes that drive our work. I had come to the conclusion by then that human connection is what drives my work, and I had identified three different kinds of human connection: human to self, human to human, and human to environment. I chose to focus on the human to human connection in this project and wanted to connect to other people through humor. Even the form of the book was a practice in connecting (while also being one of the jokes—the book is called the The Big Book of Dad Jokes, but is actually pocket size and then pages fold out to 8x the size of the book). I wanted the reader to fully interact with the book by requiring them to unfold the pages piece by piece to see the next part of the joke.
